Guy Garvey from Elbow had his money on Radiohead taking home the 2008 Mercury Music Prize but as it turns out, he lost that bet. Known for their evocative and melancholy melodies, Elbow were the ones taking home the lb20,000 cold hard on the night for their fourth album The Seldom Seen Kid. The Mancheser lads won over upstanding acts like Radiohead, Laura Marling and British Sea Power to take home the award, which Garvey has described as "the best thing that's ever happened to us". Their prize-winning album The Seldom Seen Kid had reviewers in a verbal rapture before the announcement and has had massive commercial success since. Bassist Pete Turner in reference to Badly Drawn Boy's 2001 win and said "I live three doors down from Damon Gough who won it so I can hold my head up high and give him the finger!".
